Traditional Edinburgh stone buildings - heat pump installations improving home energy efficiency
Boiler Upgrade Scheme Available

Heat Pump Installation

Heat pumps work effectively in Scottish winters and can qualify for grants of up to £7,500 through Home Energy Scotland. Air source systems cost £8,000–£14,000 installed and deliver 3–4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.

Professional air source and ground source heat pump installation for residential properties in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Paisley.

Heat Pump Technology

Heat pumps transfer thermal energy from outside air or ground into a building for heating purposes. They operate on electrical power and can achieve heating efficiencies significantly higher than traditional combustion-based systems.

Operating Efficiency

Heat pumps typically achieve Coefficients of Performance (COP) of 3.0-4.0, meaning they deliver 3-4 units of heat energy for each unit of electricity consumed.

Low Carbon Heating

Heat pumps produce no direct carbon emissions at point of use. Overall carbon footprint depends on electricity grid composition.

Heat Pump Types

Air Source Heat Pump

Extracts heat from outdoor air. More commonly installed due to lower upfront costs and simpler installation requirements.

Installation typically 2-3 days
Operates effectively in Scottish climate
Provides heating and hot water
Typical installed cost
£8,000-£14,000

Ground Source Heat Pump

Extracts heat from ground via buried pipes. Higher efficiency but requires suitable land area and greater installation complexity.

Higher efficiency ratings
Expected lifespan 20-25 years
Requires garden access
Typical installed cost
£18,000-£30,000

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Grant Availability

The UK Government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of £7,500 for air source heat pumps and £7,500 for ground source heat pumps in England and Wales. Scotland has separate funding mechanisms including Home Energy Scotland grants and loans.

Eligibility criteria typically include property ownership, replacement of fossil fuel heating systems, and adequate property insulation standards. Installations must be carried out by MCS certified contractors.

Property Suitability

Heat pumps work most efficiently with underfloor heating or larger radiators operating at lower temperatures (typically 35-55°C) compared to traditional boilers. Properties should have good insulation standards to maximize efficiency and comfort.
