Insulation Grants
Free Insulation Grants in Scotland
Insulation is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy waste and lower heating bills. If your home is poorly insulated, you may qualify for free improvements through funded schemes.
Free insulation in Scotland is funded through ECO4 and Warmer Homes Scotland for eligible households. Covered measures include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and in some cases solid wall insulation. Qualifying criteria include receiving benefits, household income under £31,000, or referral through your local council's LA Flex scheme.
An estimated 1 in 4 Scottish homes has inadequate insulation. Free insulation grants are available through schemes including ECO4 and Warmer Homes Scotland.
Why Insulation Matters
Heat loss through walls and roofs accounts for a significant proportion of energy waste in Scottish homes. Proper insulation reduces the amount of heat escaping your property, meaning your heating system works less to maintain a comfortable temperature.
The savings can be substantial. According to the Energy Saving Trust, insulating a typical semi-detached house could save around £300-£500 per year on energy bills. The improvement also raises your property's EPC rating, potentially increasing its value.
For many eligible Scottish households, the cost of these improvements is fully covered by government-backed funding schemes.
Types of Free Insulation Available
Loft Insulation
Up to 25% of heat loss in uninsulated homes occurs through the roof. Loft insulation is one of the simplest and most cost-effective improvements. Installation typically takes 2-3 hours and causes minimal disruption.
Cavity Wall Insulation
Many Scottish homes built between the 1920s and 1990s have cavity walls that can be insulated by injecting material into the gap. This reduces heat loss through walls by up to 35%.
Solid Wall Insulation
Older properties with solid walls (no cavity) can be insulated internally or externally. This is more complex and costly, but ECO4 can fund it for eligible households. External insulation also refreshes the property's appearance.
Underfloor Insulation
Available for homes with suspended timber floors. Insulation material is fitted between the floor joists, reducing heat loss through the ground floor.
Who Qualifies?
Free insulation is available through schemes like ECO4 for households meeting certain criteria:
- Receiving qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, ESA, etc.)
- Household income under £31,000 (through Local Authority Flex)
- Property with an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G
- Homeowners or private tenants (with landlord permission)
- Property is your main residence in Scotland
A surveyor will assess whether your property needs insulation and which type is most appropriate. Not all properties are suitable for all types of insulation.
The Installation Process
Eligibility check
Confirm you meet the criteria for free insulation through ECO4 or another scheme.
Property survey
A surveyor inspects your home to determine which insulation measures are needed and feasible.
Approval
The scheme provider confirms funding. You receive written confirmation before any work starts.
Installation
Qualified installers carry out the work. Loft and cavity wall insulation are usually completed in a single day.
Quality check
Post-installation inspection ensures work meets required standards.
Common Questions
Will insulation make my home warmer?
Yes. Insulation reduces heat loss, meaning your home retains warmth for longer. Most households notice an immediate improvement in comfort and a reduction in energy use.
Is there any disruption during installation?
Loft and cavity wall insulation cause minimal disruption and are usually completed in a few hours. Solid wall insulation takes longer (1-3 weeks for external) and involves more work, but installers aim to minimise inconvenience.
Can I get insulation if I already have some?
If your loft insulation is below the recommended depth (270mm), you may qualify for a top-up. The surveyor will check existing insulation levels.
